Player Spotlight: Xavier Bland
Standing at 6’3 and 185 lbs, Xavier Bland is a combo guard out of Virginia who is the perfect example of a leader on and off the court that would be a great addition to a college roster. He brings countless traits and skills that are excellent additions to his already developed game. His last winter and summer seasons have propelled him into a well-rounded 3-and-D prospect with major upside.
Bland began his high school career at Blacksburg High School in Virginia where he earned the awards of All-Conference and All-Honors both his sophomore and junior years. He then transfered to Stuart Hall and reclassified to the class of 2026, a move that quickly paid off as he helped the Dragons capture the VISSA Division IV State Championship. This upcoming season, the Dragons are led by a new head coach but Xavier is still excited to compete as they all have the goal of back-to-back champions.
This summer Bland ran with VA Premier and made sure to showcase his talent every chance he got. He highlighted his ability to control the game at all levels on both sides of the ball, taking pride in several factors. He was very proficient beyond the arc as he shot 52% from range. He does not fear any defender and will make you regret giving him space. Even with contested shots, he stays calm and knocks them down. Bland brings a tall and fluent jumpshot that catches opponents off guard quickly, especially when he has a hot hand. Xavier also excels and stretching the floor, dishing out dimes to his teammates, and create plays in any situation.
His biggest pride and joy is being one of the toughest defenders on the floor at all times. If being an elite shooter wasn’t terrifying enough, just try and get past this guy when he’s guarding you. His defensive instincts are quick and witty, causing several turnovers from opponents. Bland will make sure his opponent does not get to the rim and if someone does get close, his flawless ability to take charges prevents any easy buckets. Game after game, Xavier stays in the top of +/-, showing that his prescence does not go unnoticed on either side of the floor.
Just when you thought 3-and-D was his only contribution, Bland brings several other game changing skills to the floor. At 6’3, he’s able to jump up and slam the rock down at the rim. He also has the ability to dribble and weave through traffic with smart handles with the rock. Grabbing boards is never a problem for him either as he uses his athleticsm to snag any loose balls.
One thing that stuck out to me about Xavier is his unselfishness. He was open with me discussing how he does in fact hold college offers but chooses to not post them. Instead, he prefers to let his game speak and make sure a coach offers him because they think he would fit their program. He does not seek the attention and stays humble throughout his basketball journey, quietly showcasing his leadership.
Overall, Xavier is a proven winner who is coming off several months of success on and off the court. He’s what many prospects should strive to be like and someone who coaches will be lucky to have on their roster. As he continues to grow stronger, refine his playmaking, and lead Stuart Hall in pursuit of another championship, Bland projects as a high-impact guard capable of contributing early in his career.
