Emory Smalley has emerged as a proven winner this season. He’s shown that he can rise to the occasion and take on that leadership role for his squad. Smalley showed early signs of his production levels last season as he played a solid part in the State Quarterfinal berth he saw with the Blanchard Lions. He averaged solid numbers across the board as a Junior and now has improved those even more. This past summer Smalley ran with Southern Ties team on the NXTPRO Circuit. There, he went up against top competition from the surrounding states and signified he was a force to be reckoned with. Now, he’s averaging almost 20 points a game while leading his guys to an impressive 16-1 record heading into the first month of playoffs.

Standing at 6’0 and 170 pounds, Emory Smalley is the true definition of a passionate floor general. Every second that he’s on the floor he makes an impact on both sides of the ball. He’s everywhere. He is relentless when the ball is in his hands or not. He’s got a variety of moves to blow past defenders and even more to get the ball back on defense. Smalley excels at finding the weaknesses in a defense and penetrating those areas whether it be him putting the rock into the hoop, or finding the open man to earn the assist. He currently averages 4 assists per game. He has a lightning quick first step that is supported by crafty handles and a sturdy frame to get him to the rim. He pushes through contact and will let an opponent know how he’s feeling after the and-one finish. One of his most rewarding and tailored items in his deep bag is a flawless spin move that can be followed by a shot off the glass or pure shot from distance. His ability to rip the ball through a defenders’ face is a helpful trait as well when it comes to scoring.

As a shooter, Smalley heats up quick and when he does, he’s tough to defend against. In a matchup against a top ranked Kingfisher team, Smalley shot excellent racking up 22 points in a big win. He nailed some big shots from beyond the arc to extend the lead. The corner is one of his best spots and when he gets there, very rarely does he miss. His shot his pure and is structured from a quick release. He can shoot it at any speed which rewards him in fast-paced situations. He keeps his composure regardless and never steers away to be the guy to hit the big shot. He’s averaging 19.4 points a game with an impressive and efficient 76% from the field. From beyond the arc, he’s shooting 50%. This dude has a deadeye from any range.

When it comes to defense, Smalley does just as well as he makes sure his opponents know he’s not going anywhere all game. He’s not afraid to matchup with anyone and will force turnovers regardless. He does an excellent job of reading offensive patterns which allows him to jump passing lanes and snag sneaky steals. He’s currently averaging almost 2.5 steals a game which almost always turns into a breakaway score at the other end. Smalley is doesn’t hesitate to put his nose in the fight either as he averages 3 rebounds a game. One of my favorite traits of his though is leadership on the floor. He is very vocal and dedicated to his teammates, directing them where they need to be. He’s also just got that competitive edge that you want every guy on the squad to have. He does a great job of balancing his emotions and knows when to get the crowd roaring after a finish through contact.

Emory’s game has been recognized this season as he’s earned honors of the Bethel Tournament MVP and making the Noble All-Tournament Team. I truly believe this dude can play at the next level. He’s got all the pieces a coach should want their floor general to exhibit in any situation. He’s a competitor, leader, and winner. He’s dedicated to his teammates and has the goals of going back to the 4A State Tournament but bringing home the gold ball this time.
