2028 Sooner State Standouts at Session 5: Norman
Session 5 in Norman, OK brought the energy, passion, competition, and skill. Each guy on the floor was ready to go to work and claim what is theirs. I saw an abundance of standouts from each class. As a native of Oklahoma and a journalist for high school hoops here in the area, I already had previous knowledge of which Oklahoma hoopers would perform this weekend. To recognize them all, I will proceed with the soon to be juniors of the 2028 class.
Cooper Witte | 6'2 | G | Southern Ties PRO16 16u | Deer Creek
Cooper Witte established that he is a force to be reckoned with this weekend. He was an absolute beast. He is a 6'2 guard who runs the floor as a prominent floor general. He has elite ball control that allows him to naviagte any defense with ease. He competes at the highest level at all times. Hitting contested shots is not a problem for him. However, he's able to use his skillset to create seperation from defenders. He shot very well from beyond the arc in Norman. He's noyt afraid to get down the lane and finish through contact either. Witte was the best in the gym each day.
Cooper Stewart | 6'6 | G | Southern Ties PRO16 16u | Noble
Cooper had a great performance every time he stepped on the floor. He's a lengthy guard who can knock shots down, drive to the rim, force turnovers, and all around impact the game. He did a great job of fueling his Southern Ties team to a 4-0 record. He's never afraid to put his body on the line to earn another possession for his guys. Knows how to capitalize on opportunities given.
Joshua Baba | 6'5 | CG | YGC PRO16 16u | Edmond Santa Fe
Baba is an all around full-package deal that you don't want to miss out on. He carries an athletic and stout 6'5 frame that is ideal for all situations. He has a great feel for the game as he can serve as a 2-way player. He cuts hard, slashes cleanly, attacks at all times, and pressures on defense intensely. His ability to knock shots down from the mid-range is a key skill of his.
TJ Newton | 6'2 | G | YGC PRO16 16u | Edmond Santa Fe
Like his Twitter username, TJ is a sniper. He's a 6'1 guard with great tendencies to be the guy who you'd want taking the clutch shot. He reads defenses well to be able to get to his spots for the open contest. This weekend with YGC, he continued to prove that he's one of the best to do so. He was a leading scorer last season for Santa Fe and is set to do so again.
Kace Patton | 6'1 | CG | Oklahoma Chaos 16u | McAlester
Patton showcased his ability to be a deep threat at all times this weekend. He poured in a total of 17 successful three pointers. He's a very confident shooter who can let it fly at all speeds and tempos. The McAlester Buffalo was a solid addition to the squad last season but he's proving that he's ready for a larger role in the 5A class.
Timothy Chambers | 5'10 | PG | Oklahoma Chaos 16u | Bishop McGuinness
Chambers does not care who is in front of him on defense, he will go at them no matter what. At 5'10, he's got the perfect build to be a shifty ball carrier but someone who can serve well on the perimeter for taking far shots too. This weekend he did all of that. He's got a clean jumper that gets the ball up and on a line to the basket. Does a great job of staying down on defense as well.
Joshua Dockum | 6'4 | G | Oklahoma United 16u | Edmond Memorial
Joshua is an underrated guard in this 2028 class here in Oklahoma. He's a built 6'4 guard who goes to work at several spots. He attacks the lanes well, creates seperation with ease, facilitates the floor, and gets the job done on both sides of the ball. He brings high basketball IQ with his game that is perfect for leading his guys all 94 feet.
Deacon Garza | 6'2 | G | Team Oklahoma 16u | Norman North
Despite a tough weekend with injuries and bruises, Deacon Garza showed out. He pushed through the hardships and went to work every game. He brought a different look that I had not seen from him yet. He had stone cold eyes the entire weekend. He was not there to be nice. Garza was a bully on the court, bringing physicality and toughness every drive. Drives to the rim and clean dishes were seen several times from him. Also, Deacon has the ability to pull-up from the mid-range to knock down a contested shot. On defense, he applies continous pressure with a strong base that can prevent easy buckets.
Evan Attebery | 6'0 | G | Team Oklahoma 16u | Edmond Memorial
Evan is one of the most prominent defenders I've seen so far this season. He is always in his opponents' face and does not let them have an easy day. He brings quick feet, good eyes, and a vocal presence to lead his guys on defense. On the other side of the ball, Attebery is just as developed. He has crafty takes to the rim, finishes strong, and can dish it out to the open man when neccesary.
